How Much Does Fencing Cost in the UK?
There is no single typical price for every garden fence. The cost of a new or replacement fence depends on the total length and height, style and material, posts and gravel boards, gates, removal of old fencing, ground conditions, access and local labour rates. A panel price alone misses posts, fixings, post mix, labour and any removal or disposal work.

Typical fencing cost per metre in the UK
Fencing is often compared by linear metre: the measured length of the fence run, not the area in square metres. Divide a fitted project price by the number of metres to compare like-for-like specifications. Ask whether a figure includes panels or boards, timber or concrete posts, gravel boards, fixings, post mix, installation, VAT if applicable, waste handling, gates and removing the old fence. A materials-only price is not the same as a fitted price. Fixed setup work also means a short run may cost more per metre than a longer run.
We do not state a national average or universal rate per metre: height, fence style, site and region all change the scope. A local contractor must check the final specification and site before quoting.
What affects fence installation cost?
Longer and taller runs need different quantities and fitting work. Standard timber panels, feather-edge boards and panels with concrete posts have different material and installation requirements. Timber or concrete posts, gravel boards and gate size affect the specification. Slopes, uneven or paved ground and narrow or restricted access can add work. Old fence removal and disposal, difficult ground, restricted access, unusual slopes, gates or extra preparation may matter for some projects, but not every job needs all of them. Separate these items when comparing quotes so exclusions are clear.
