What affects the cost of a fence?
Length and height affect how much material and labour a project may need. The estimator uses the selected fence style, such as timber panels, feather-edge, concrete posts and timber panels, composite, metal or decorative slats, to calculate a starting range. Posts, gravel boards, panels or boards and fixings appear in the likely materials list where relevant.
Sloping, uneven, concrete or paved ground and restricted access can add to the estimate. Removing part or all of an old fence and adding a single or double gate are also reflected in the cost range. Your budget, timing and postcode help describe the project but do not determine the estimate.

What does the estimate include?
The result gives an early cost range rather than one fixed price, together with likely materials, an outline of work stages and an indicative timeline. The calculation includes allowances for setup and waste handling, with an uncertainty buffer for variation.
Actual contractor quotations can differ after an on-site inspection, local labour rates, final specification and site conditions are confirmed.

New fence or replacing an existing fence?
A new fence can begin with setting out and installing posts, gravel boards and panels. For a replacement, removing and disposing of some or all of the old fence may be needed first; the estimator asks about this separately. Existing posts and site conditions should be assessed before finalising a specification.
