Driveway Cost Calculator UK
Planning a new driveway or replacing an old surface? Enter its approximate area, your preferred surface, access and ground details in the shared Patio / Slabbing / Driveway estimator for an early indicative cost range and project summary. This is not a contractor quotation or site survey.
Calculate my driveway cost. Driveway is selected at step 1, and you can change it. No sign-up required to get your estimate.
How the driveway calculator works
- Start the shared estimator with Driveway selected on step 1; you can change the project type if needed.
- Give your postcode, then choose an area band or enter length and width.
- Describe the existing surface, access, ground, drainage, intended use and preferred finish.
- Review an early indicative range, materials, work stages, timing and the main cost drivers.
What affects driveway cost?
Area and finish determine the starting material-and-installation allowance. The shared estimator includes block paving, gravel, concrete, tarmac and resin-bound surface as driveway-relevant choices. It also offers other patio and paving finishes without checking whether a surface is suitable for vehicles, so confirm the chosen product and installation with a qualified contractor.
Old paving, concrete, gravel, tarmac, mixed surfaces and uneven ground can change modelled removal or preparation. Narrow, side, through-house or restricted access and a slope, uneven or soft ground may add handling or preparation allowances. The calculator adds an allowance where a drainage channel or soakaway may be needed, and where parking cars or heavier vehicles is selected as the intended use. Setup, waste handling and uncertainty are also included. Project type, postcode, budget and timing do not directly set a distinct driveway price.
What does the estimate include?
The result gives an early indicative cost range, likely materials, an outline of work stages, indicative timing and factors behind the estimate. It uses planning assumptions, not UK-wide average driveway prices. A contractor must assess the ground and agree the actual design, excavation depth, sub-base, drainage and price.
Example only: a driveway project
Imagine selecting Driveway for a 25–50 m² area, old tarmac to replace, easy vehicle access, a slight slope, uncertain drainage, parking cars and a block-paving finish. These are possible answers in the shared estimator, not a real customer job or a manually calculated price. Enter your own details to receive a project-specific planning range.
Existing driveway and ground preparation
An old surface may need to be lifted and disposed of before excavation, levelling and sub-base work. Starting from grass or soil may still need excavation and a suitable base. The estimator uses the selected existing surface and ground conditions to adjust its early range; it cannot inspect an existing base or decide if it can be reused.
Access and drainage
A narrow route, access through the house or restricted space can add handling time for materials and waste. Slopes, levels and soft ground affect preparation. Drainage needs vary by site: a channel or soakaway may be relevant in some cases, but the tool does not check drainage compliance or determine a final solution.
Why driveway area alone is not enough
Two driveways with the same footprint may need different surfaces, removal, sub-base work, access arrangements and drainage. Approximate dimensions help start an estimate, but the finish and site answers give the early range its context. Use the Driveway Cost Calculator to describe your project.
Getting a more useful estimate
Measure the space as well as you can, note what is already there, record slopes and access constraints, and photograph any areas where water collects. These notes and photos can help explain the project when requesting a contractor quotation; the online calculator does not analyse your photos or certify a specification.
Common driveway questions
How much does a driveway cost in the UK?
There is no universal fitted price. Surface, area and site work vary; use the estimator for an early range and ask local contractors for a site-specific quote.
What affects driveway cost the most?
Area and finish set the main allowance in the calculator. Removal, ground conditions, access, potential drainage and intended vehicle use can change the result.
Does an existing driveway need to be removed?
Not always. Its condition and the proposed new surface need a site assessment. The estimator can account for selected old-surface removal but cannot judge whether a base is reusable.
Does drainage affect driveway cost?
Possible drainage work can add to the modelled range. The right solution depends on the site and should be assessed by a professional.
How accurate is an online driveway cost calculator?
It gives a planning range using your answers, not a surveyed or binding quotation. Hidden ground conditions and the final specification may change a contractor's price.
Can ConstructAgent estimate both patios and driveways?
Yes, the same Patio / Slabbing / Driveway estimator accepts both project types. It does not switch to a separate driveway pricing model when you choose Driveway.
