How the patio cost calculator works
- Enter an approximate patio area band, or provide length and width in metres.
- Choose the project type, existing surface and preferred finish; you can say if you are not sure yet.
- Describe access, ground conditions, drainage needs and how you intend to use the surface.
- Receive an early cost range, likely materials, work stages and an indicative timeline.
What affects the cost of a patio?
Area and your chosen finish affect the amount of material and fitting work in the model. The estimator offers concrete slabs, porcelain paving, natural stone, block paving, gravel, concrete, tarmac and a resin-bound surface in a shared patio, paving and driveway planner. For a patio, compare finishes appropriate to your intended use and discuss the final specification with an installer. These modelled costs are not UK-wide market averages or fixed prices per square metre.
Existing gravel, old paving, old concrete, tarmac, mixed surfaces or uneven ground can add surface removal or preparation work compared with grass or soil. Narrow, through-house or restricted access and sloping, uneven or soft ground can increase the modelled range. A possible drainage channel or soakaway and heavier intended uses can add further allowances. Not every project needs drainage work or old-surface removal; a site inspection determines the actual scope.

What does the estimate include?
The output is an early cost range with a confidence label, likely materials, work stages, indicative timeline and an itemised breakdown of modelled cost drivers. The model includes allowances for mobilisation, standard sub-base preparation and waste handling, then considers the selected surface, removal, access, ground, possible drainage and intended use. An uncertainty buffer reflects variation. Postcode, budget and timing help describe your project but do not directly change the calculated price.
It is not a contractor quote. Final prices can differ by finish, agreed sub-base, site conditions, location and contractor assessment.
Example patio project: illustrative inputs, not a price
For example, choose Replace existing paving or driveway for a garden seating area of 10–25 m², porcelain paving over old paving, narrow access, a slight slope, uncertain drainage needs and seating or outdoor dining. These are compatible answers to explore in the existing Patio estimator, not a real customer project, a manual estimate or a national price guide. Enter your own project details to see your early range.
Ground preparation and existing surfaces
Preparation can involve clearing vegetation, lifting old paving, breaking out concrete or levelling uneven ground before excavating and compacting a sub-base. What is necessary depends on the existing surface and site. Describe what is already there so a contractor can assess removal and disposal.
Access and drainage
Moving materials and waste through a narrow passage or house can take extra handling time. A slope or soft ground may affect preparation. Drainage needs depend on the site and final design: tell the estimator if a channel or soakaway may be required, but have any solution confirmed by a contractor rather than assuming it is needed.
